Performers Biographies:

MATTHEW HELLER
A native of Tacoma, Washington, double bassist MATTHEW HELLER joined the Calgary Philharmonic in 2007. He has appeared frequently as a recitalist and chamber musician, including performances with the Fort Macleod International Festival, Mountain View International Festival, Calgary Bach Festival Society, Spiritus Chamber Orchestra, and Kensington Sinfonia. His most recent recital appearances have been at Cantos Music Foundation in Calgary and at the Hammond Ashley Memorial Double Bass Workshop at Seattle Pacific University.
Mr. Heller was previously a member of the New World Symphony (Miami, Florida), Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has been an orchestral fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and the Verbier Festival, where he also performed on the chamber music series with James Levine and Lynn Harrell. As a member of the Spoleto Festival USA, Matthew performed chamber music with the St. Lawrence String Quartet in 2005 and 2006.
Matthew completed studies at the New England Conservatory and at Northwestern University, and was a prizewinner at the International Society of Bassists’ orchestral competition in 2007. He has been fortunate to work closely with some of today’s most accomplished bassists, including Donald Palma, Harold Robinson, Edwin Barker, and Paul Ellison. Mr. Heller performs on an Italian double bass attributed to Antonio Gilbertini, dated 1841.
